Relocating Abroad: Skills You Must Learn Before Traveling Abroad.

As you know, things are not all rosy for immigrants staying abroad, without a skill surviving abroad can be difficult. If you don’t want to be jobless or face hardship when you travel abroad, then learn these skills before traveling abroad from your home country.

Having a lucrative and a profitable skill either as student or a skilled worker is essential because it comes in handy during the settling down process. These hands-on skills have been in demand over the years and even in the coming years.

Below are practical hands-on skills you can learn and get started with your travel plans.

IT Skills
The world is evolving and technology is making its way into every aspect of our lives. As a result, the demand is high for digital and technical skills as per its very lucrative. As a prospective immigrant, you can make out time and learn these skills and become a professional before relocating. Tech is very broad but I would make this as easy as possible so you don’t need to be discouraged if you are interested in pursuing a career in tech.   All you need is to find a role that aligns with your interests, strengths & experience. Before you begin, ask yourself what aspect of tech should I learn? What can I do in tech? Is this skill an high income tech skill? And yes Tech is not hard, some tech courses/skills doesn’t need you to know how to code.

A good example is Copywriting, SEO (Search Engine Optimization), UX/UI (User eXperience Research / User Interface), Quality Assurance Engineering, IT Project Managing, Web Analysis, Information Architecture, Data Analysis, Mobile Designing,  Technical Support, SAP (System, Applications and Products) Consulting, ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) Consulting.

The good news is, you can learn these skills “online” and often times “for free”. Write out a bucket list, the more you learn and put in that bucket, the more in-demand you will be and the more money you will earn. Some other tech skills you might consider include;

Coding, Blockchain, Data Science, Cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Cloud Computing, Robotics etc

Writing from experience, the other skills that you need to learn that will help you get hired upon relocating abroad are;

Baking

Bakers are in high demand, people abroad eat a lot of baked foods. You will definitely get a good job as a baker, you can work at a bakery or a breakfast spot.

 

Carpentry

In abroad, some houses are built form the scratch with a wooden frame and covered with a sheet rock. Therefore as a carpenter, you are definitely getting a job.

 

Hairdressing

This include braiding, barbing, microbladding, lashes technician, tattooist. If you are skilled in any of these, you will make a lot of money because a lot of people abroad are fashion focused.

 

Massage Therapy

If you are skilled at massaging, touching people in the right places to help them ease their stress, you are definitely getting a job at a Spa because they are always hiring.

 

Flooring

People living abroad are always changing their floors. Having a vast knowledge of hardwood flooring and tiles setting is an upper hedge.

 

Truck Driving

Having a valid truck driver’s license can get you a well paying driving job because there are shortage of truck drivers. And just incase you can’t get licensed on truck driving, try as much as possible to have a driver’s license before leaving your country.

 

Auto Mechanic

Learning how to work on cars, how to fix cars will get you a well paying job if you are focused.

 

Plumbing

Even if you can’t learn anything, learn this. Have an idea on how to run water in the kitchen or in the bathroom. Plumbers are always called in for repairs like this.

 

Painting & Electrical Work

If you are good at painting, building and running wires in buildings. You will always find a job because these skills are hired when new houses are built, when renovation is ongoing or even repairs.

 

Nannying

If you are good with kids, you are loving. You can become a baby nanny because a lot of people always need someone to take care of their kids when they are out.

 

Caregiving

You can become a caregiver. There are some caregiving school you can attend in your home country before relocating. Caregivers work at an hospice (a place where people who need extra care e.g accident victims are kept) or a nursing home (a place where people go to retire).

 

Conclusion

Aside medical practitioners, the other set of people who are making money abroad are those who learnt digital skills and handwork. The above mentioned skills would give you a head start when you get abroad. The wise thing to do is learn these skills in your home country before relocating abroad.
