How can I apply for jobs with the Ontario government?
1. Select a Region: The Ontario Government, one of the largest employers in the province, has mapped out five regions to work within: North, East, West, Central, and Toronto. Each of these regions has a variety of job openings. To start your job search, decide on the area you are most interested in.
2. Search Jobs – By specifying some or all of the following, you can narrow down your job search beyond region.
- CITY:Choose a city from the area. Please take note that the cities you can choose from only have open job postings.
- JOB TYPE – Choose one or more job streams that you are considering: a)eighteen career paths
b) Positions available with the French Language Service (FLS):positions requiring a certain level of French language competency, defined as the capacity to express oneself in French verbally and/or in writing. Both English and French proficiency will be requested of the applicant. - SALARY MINIMUM– By a minimum wage, if one is specified in the job posting.
- JOB ID # – By the number given as a special identifier for the employment competition.
3. Can’t seem to find what you’re looking for?Get email alerts for up to nine months when new positions matching your career interests are listed on the Ontario Government (OPS) website. To sign up, go to Employment Alert.
4. Recognize the Job Ad – View a glossary of OPS Job Ad Terms. To learn more about the position you are interested in, be sure to look beneath the job advertisement under “Additional Details” and, if available, the “Job Spec.” Here, you can learn more about the duties of the position as well as any rewards and privileges that may be available. The job postings on the Ontario Government website will be available in both English and French for occupations that have been recognized as bilingual. On both the English and French versions of the website, positions that are not declared bilingual are not translated and are solely displayed in English.
Your ability to communicate and/or write in French will be evaluated and rated against (in decreasing order of proficiency) superior, advanced-plus, advanced, or advanced-minus standards if the Ontario job posting for which you are applying specifies a level of French-Language Service proficiency. If you are chosen to move forward in the hiring process.
Both English and French proficiency are required.
The top applicant will need to obtain an OPS employment security clearance before receiving an employment offer when a “employment security screening check” is noted as a prerequisite on the job posting.
Candidates will receive a more thorough explanation of this procedure from the evaluation panel, which will include the following:
- Verification of identity and personal information (name, address, date of birth) with photo ID
- Police record checks
- Other non-police record checks e.g. Driving History Search, if applicable
- Reference check with previous employers (last five years) and given references
5. Be sure to submit your application by the deadline and pay attention to the specific application instructions listed in each job posting. On the deadline day, OPS will accept applications up until 11:59 p.m. EST.
6. Tailor your resume and cover letter to the requirements listed in the job posting.
Make sure to be succinct and explain how your expertise, experience, and talents best suit the requirements for the position.
7. Use the method outlined in the job posting to enter the competition. The acceptable means of application for the competition will be listed in each advertisement. Include the Job ID# in your application, please.
- Apply Online:Most competitions demand that you submit an online application. You have access to this quick and simple form of application submission as noted on the job posting. Simply locate the Apply Online icon in the bottom left corner of the job posting and follow the directions to submit a single PDF (.pdf), WORD (.doc,.docx), plain text (.txt), or rich-text file with your cover letter and CV attached (.rtf).
- Email, postal mail, or fax applicationsare accepted for just certain competitions. Please carefully read the Contact Details on the job posting to decide whether these ways of application are acceptable.
Applicants in Ontario have the right to ask for accommodations during the hiring process.
If an applicant needs work accommodation and is invited to take part in an assessment procedure (such as an interview or test), they should communicate their needs to the Recruitment Services Centre using the contact information listed on the job posting.
8. Verify the status of your application: There are two ways to do this for a competition.
1) You will get an email acknowledging your application if you apply online and include an email address. There will be a link in it that you can use whenever you like to see where OPS is in the hiring process for that position.
For a quick rundown of what to anticipate, visit OPS’s hiring steps.
(2) If you do not have an acknowledgement email, you can search for the position using the numerical portion of the Job ID number on the main OPS Careers page. This will take you to a copy of the advertisement and information about the competition. The competition has not yet advanced to the screening stage if the competition status is not displayed (for example, if all you can see is a copy of the job advertisement).
Only those applicants who have been invited to move on in the hiring process will be contacted.
You have the opportunity to convince us why you are the best candidate for the job if you are invited to take part in the Ontario Public Service evaluation process. At least three different sorts of assessments are to be anticipated. The most typical and significant one is a job interview, which may also involve written tests, presentations, etc. depending on the candidate’s qualifications. You will be given more details about the evaluation process if you are contacted.
Ontario Government Job Vacancies Hiring Procedures
Below is a quick summary of the Ontario Government’s employment and recruitment procedures. You may know where OPS is in the hiring process if you have submitted an online application for a position.
Step 1: Post a job listing
Jobs advertised on OPS Careers are available for a minimum of 10 working days. Also, some of the job openings might be promoted on outside websites. OPS will accept applications for a position until the closing time of 11:59 EST on the closing date.
Application screening: in step two
All applications that arrive on or before the deadline are evaluated and scored in relation to the requirements listed in the job posting.
Candidates that best illustrate how they meet the requirements for the position in their resume and cover letter will be given the opportunity to move on in the hiring process.
Phase 3: Assessment
Here is your chance to demonstrate to us how you best fit the job’s requirements. The HR staff evaluates the candidates invited to move further in the employment process at this point.
